The Blue Ghosts Fireflies are an annual event that only happens in this part of Planet Earth! .

Visit Deerfields and experience the Blue Ghost Fireflies! These serene, mesmerizing, and soul touching bioluminescent native insects only inhabit pristine environments in WNC......and Deerfields is the most beautiful and easiest to get to destination to experience one of natures true wonders.
Enjoy the scenic drive on South Mills River Road on your way to Deerfields. The valley was first settled in the late 1700’s by Europeans, but has an Original People history of tens of thousands of years. Their spirit can be felt. especially as you enter our nearly one mile driveway into the watershed known as Deerfields.
When you arrive we will instruct you where to park. You will be able to mingle on the grounds if you arrive early. We will start our introduction and instruction session at 7:30 so please arrive early. The gate will be closed during the tour and no entry is permitted if you are late.
As dusk approaches we will head into the woods. The Blue Ghosts are most active the first hour after dusk and wane as the night progresses. For this reason we end the tour at 9:45 PM. You will see more than one area where the Blue Ghosts live and breed. We also have another bioluminescent insect you will witness called the Dismilites. Look in the link below for more information.
Please bring a red flashlight with a dim setting so you can find your way in the darkness. NO WHITE flashlights are permitted as they hurt your and other’s night vision, and shut down the Blue Ghosts’ activities. Bring a light jacket if you think you might want one. The walk back to the area is from 5 minutes to 10 minutes depending on the area we lead your group. You must be able to walk on level ground this far to participate. There are chairs in each area so there is no need to bring your own chairs although you are welcome to.
Children are welcome. They must be supervised and with parents at all times.
